Updating n8n and rolling back

Your workspace runs n8n, and new n8n versions become available from time to time. This guide shows you how to check which version you are on, update when you are ready, and undo an update if something is not right.

Note: The Automations tab and the Version card are available to members on the paid Smart Marketing plan.

Find the Version card

  1. Log in to your dashboard at www.1smart.link.
  2. Open the Automations tab.
  3. Look for the Version card.

The card shows Installed — the n8n version your workspace is running right now. If there is nothing newer available, the card shows only that installed version. That is normal and nothing is wrong. It simply means you are already on the newest version we offer.

How versions are offered to you

Updates are never installed for you. You choose if and when to update, and your workspace keeps running the installed version until you decide.

Before a new n8n version appears on your card, we test it. That means you are not the first person to try it, and workflows that already work are far less likely to be disrupted. When a tested newer version is ready, the card changes to show Update available together with the version number and a Snapshot, then update button.

If you are mid-way through building something important — a new-order notification, for example — there is no pressure to update immediately. The offer stays on the card until you act on it.

Update your workspace

  1. Open the Automations tab and find the Version card.
  2. Check that it shows Update available and note the version number offered.
  3. Click Snapshot, then update.
  4. Wait while the workspace restarts. This is brief.
  5. Refresh the page and confirm the Installed version now matches the version you were offered.

Clicking Snapshot, then update does two things in order. First it takes a backup of your workspace exactly as it is at that moment. That backup appears in your Backups list labelled before update, so you can always identify it later. Only after the backup is taken does the update run.

Tip: Before you update, it is worth pausing any workflow that runs on a tight schedule — a daily summary email, for instance — so a run does not land in the middle of the restart. You can re-enable it as soon as the workspace is back.

What happens next

Your workspace comes back on the new n8n version with all your workflows and credentials in place. Open one or two workflows you rely on and check they still look and behave as expected. Running a test execution on a simple workflow, such as a website form into a spreadsheet, is a quick way to confirm everything is healthy.

Roll back an update

For 7 days after an update, the Version card shows a Roll back button. This is there so that an update is never a one-way decision.

  1. Open the Automations tab and find the Version card.
  2. Click Roll back.
  3. Confirm when prompted.
  4. Wait for the workspace to restart, then refresh the page.

A rollback returns your workspace to the n8n version it was on just before the update, along with the workflows and data it had at that moment.

Warning: A rollback undoes everything you changed after the update, not just the version. Any new workflow, edit, or credential added since updating will be gone. If recent changes matter to you, export them or note them down before you roll back.

After 7 days the Roll back button no longer appears. At that point, the backup labelled before update in your Backups list is still your route back if you need it.

Troubleshooting

The card shows no update available

There is nothing newer that has passed our testing. Check back another time; the card updates itself when a new version is ready.

A workflow behaves differently after updating

Open the workflow and review the affected node. n8n occasionally changes how a node is configured between versions. If you cannot resolve it quickly, use Roll back within the 7-day window to return to the previous version, then contact support so we can help you move forward on the newer version.

I rolled back and lost recent work

A rollback restores the state from just before the update. If you exported anything before rolling back, import it again. If you did not, contact support and we will check what recovery options are available from your backups.

Still need help?

If an update or rollback does not complete, or your workspace does not come back after a restart, contact support from your dashboard and include the version number shown on your Version card.
