Adding a WhatsApp widget to your bio page
The WhatsApp widget lets you place a branded green button on your bio page so visitors can reach you on WhatsApp with a single tap. This guide walks you through adding the widget and configuring each of the five supported WhatsApp link types.
Note: You need a 1smart.link account and at least one bio page already created. If you haven't set up a bio page yet, do that first.
Add the WhatsApp widget
- Log in to your dashboard at
www.1smart.link. - Open Bio Pages from the left sidebar and select the bio page you want to edit.
- In the bio page editor, click Add Widget (or the equivalent add button in your widget list).
- Choose WhatsApp from the available widget types.
- The widget settings panel will open. You will see a WhatsApp Link Type selector — pick the type that matches your goal (see the section below for details on each type).
- Fill in the required fields for your chosen link type.
- Optionally customise the Title and Subtitle that appear on the button.
- Click Save.
Your bio page now displays a green button featuring the official WhatsApp logo. Visitors who tap it are taken straight into WhatsApp.
Choose your WhatsApp link type
The widget supports five distinct link types. Pick the one that matches what you want visitors to do.
1. Click to Chat
Opens a one-to-one WhatsApp conversation with you. This is the most common option for customer enquiries, support, or booking requests.
Fields to fill in:
- Phone number — Enter your full number including the country code, with no
+sign, no spaces, and no dashes. See the number format section below for examples. - Pre-filled message (optional) — Text that automatically appears in the visitor's chat box when they tap the button. They can edit it before sending. Useful prompts include "Hi, I'd like to enquire about…" or "I'm interested in booking a session."
Behind the scenes the widget generates a link in the format wa.me/{digits}?text={encoded_message}.
2. Channel
Links visitors to your WhatsApp Channel so they can follow your broadcasts. Paste the full URL of your WhatsApp Channel into the link field.
3. Group Invite
Sends visitors to a WhatsApp group invite page. Paste the group invite link you copied from WhatsApp into the link field.
4. Business Catalogue
Directs visitors to your WhatsApp Business catalogue so they can browse your products or services. Paste your catalogue URL into the link field.
5. Custom Link
Use this for any other WhatsApp URL that doesn't fit the categories above. Paste the full URL into the link field. The widget will still display the branded green WhatsApp button.
Phone number format for Click to Chat
Getting the number format right is essential — an incorrect number means the button won't open the correct chat.
| Country | Country code | Example number | What to enter |
|---|---|---|---|
| India | 91 | +91 98765 43210 | 919876543210 |
| United Kingdom | 44 | +44 7912 345678 | 447912345678 |
| United States | 1 | +1 555 123 4567 | 15551234567 |
Rules to remember:
- Always include the country code at the start.
- Remove the
+sign. - Remove all spaces, dashes, and brackets.
- If your local number starts with a leading
0(common in the UK), drop that0— the country code replaces it.
Customise the button text
Every WhatsApp widget lets you set two text fields:
- Title — The main label on the button, e.g. "Chat with us" or "Join our WhatsApp group."
- Subtitle (optional) — A smaller line of supporting text beneath the title, e.g. "We reply within 30 minutes."
Both fields are free-text. Keep them short — one line each works best on mobile screens.
Track clicks with a pixel
If you have a retargeting pixel assigned to your bio page, the WhatsApp widget can fire a Contact event each time a visitor taps the button. This lets you build retargeting audiences from people who initiated a WhatsApp conversation.
Tip: Assign the pixel at the bio-page level first. Once it is active, widget-level events like Contact are tracked automatically on click.
Result
After saving, preview your bio page. You should see a green button with the WhatsApp logo, your chosen title, and (if set) a subtitle. Tapping the button opens WhatsApp with the action you configured — whether that is a direct chat, a channel follow, a group invite, a catalogue, or a custom link.
Troubleshooting
- Button opens WhatsApp but no chat appears. Double-check your phone number format. The most common mistake is including the
+sign or a leading0. - Pre-filled message is missing. Ensure you entered text in the pre-filled message field and saved the widget. Some WhatsApp desktop clients may not display pre-filled text — this is a WhatsApp limitation, not a 1smart.link issue.
- Link type doesn't seem to work. Confirm the URL you pasted is a valid, publicly accessible WhatsApp link. Expired group invite links, for example, will show an error on WhatsApp's side.
